The Western Canadian Robotics Society will be at The Calgary Public Library on April 13th to give Calgary a preview of some of the robots for the Western Canadian Robot Games. Come on down to the Central Library between 10AM and 2PM to see hacked Roombas, Arduino based tanks & rideable Scoperta Chairs!
Date: 13 April 2013
Time: 10AM – 2PM
Location: 616 Macleod Trail SE
We recently hosted the first iteration of Community Robotics in Calgary – which was a smashing success!
Through the volunteer efforts of a few awesome roboticists and the sponsorship of a generous local business, we were able to bring 2 full Saturdays of robot building and one showcase event to participants at the Calgary Public Library. Volunteers from the Calgary Maker Foundation, The WCRS and our sponsor – Quadrus Investment Services – enabled us to purchase over a dozen locally designed, open source robot kits from Calgary’s own Solarbotics and deliver them to two library locations simultaneously (Fish Creek & Country Hills). We had over 30 participants hard at work on October 13th and 20th to complete the Solarbotics kits, then The ages of the participants ranged from 11 to 65 years old, both female and male alike. Some had lightly dabbled in electronics before & most have never held a soldering gun – but all left with the ability to build their own autonomous robot 🙂
We spearheaded this initiative as a pilot project to see how well robotics would be received in the Calgary Public Library, and we discovered that the hunger for such knowledge is insatiable. The participants were not able to keep the robots, instead our organization (The WCRS) can put them to use for demonstrations and teaching applications for other future roboticists. Perhaps one day soon we will see permanent robotics & electronics learning stations at libraries all around the city to aid the curious and the innovative in their quest for knowledge.
We posted a flickr set of the event, which can be found here.
If you’d like to get involved in robotics, join us every Saturday at 10AM at the Calgary Aerospace Museum. We meet to discuss robotics & teach anyone and everyone where to start, whether it be soldering, writing code or electronics fundamentals!
We are sorry about the wait; things have been really busy for us here in Calgary!
And now here’s what you’ve all been waiting for – the rules for the new Off-Roadbot Challenge!
This is a new addition to our annual event, and we invite everyone to take part. Taking place in the field beside the museum, competitors will have their robots navigate an outdoor obstacle course from one end of the field to the other.
Take note that your robot will have to be rugged enough to survive potentially wet and bumpy terrain, as well as navigate through tall grass without losing it’s bearings. This challenge is meant for autonomous ground-based robots that are either mechanically or battery powered.
